Asymmetries of the Left and Right Temporal Lobes

چکیده

Around 1861, after studying various cases of left hemisphere lesions and alterations in language, Paul Broca became convinced of the correctness of the studies of Mark Dax, which stated that language ability was localized on the left side of the brain, given that since 1877, it had already been considered that man, among all the other animals, had the most asymmetric brain with the largest quantity of acquired abilities, of which language was the highest, since it distinguished humans from animals. In this way, the concept was established that asymmetry is the defining characteristic of the human brain (Crow, 2004). This concept ran the risk of being lost during the 19 century, but reemerged in the second half of the 20 century due to the anatomical rediscovery of asymmetry by Geschwind & Levitsky (1968), in a study which compared the two sides of the brain, highlighting above all the asymmetry present in the left hemisphere.

ارزیابی تقارن نیمکره مغزی کودکان مبتلا به لکنت رشدی از طریق الکتروانسفالوگرافی کمی در حین استراحت

Background and Objective: In recent years, numerous studies have suggested dysfunction in brain symmetry as the reason behind developmental stuttering. The purpose of this study was to validate the theory of reversed right hemisphere asymmetry in developmental stutters by quantified EEG. Materials and Methods: 13 Subjects with developmental stuttering, 7 to 23 years old were studied using QE...

Purpose: This study sought to determine sex differences in surface anatomical parameters (thickness and surface areas) of human cerebral cortex in different lobes of the left hemisphere in normal right-handed subjects and right-handed subjects suffering from Alzheimer and Parkinson's diseases. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was performed on 72 normal human brains...

Background and Aim: In the present study, the cerebral surface landmarks in human fresh autopsy specimens were investigated. Methods and Materials/Patients: Totally, 37 fresh adult autopsy human brain specimens from the Rasht Forensic Medicine Center were enrolled. Four specimens were excluded because of some traumatic injuries to cerebral cortex. Demographic information of all cases was obt...

Cerebral Asymmetries: Complementary and Independent Processes

Most people are right-handed and left-cerebrally dominant for speech, leading historically to the general notion of left-hemispheric dominance, and more recently to genetic models proposing a single lateralizing gene. This hypothetical gene can account for higher incidence of right-handers in those with left cerebral dominance for speech. It remains unclear how this dominance relates to the rig...
